Flammable Greece

Increasing awareness and preparedness for extreme fire weather and behaviour

Objectives

Critical fire weather patterns

Define their climatology in Greece (frequency, strength, duration) and examine relationships with atmospheric teleconnections.

Extreme fire behaviour

Study the processes and conditions under which major transitions in fire behaviour take place, seeking for thresholds that could be used for early warnings.

Coupled fire-atmosphere modelling

Advance fire spread prediction capacity by developing a wind gust parameterization, to be coupled with the Rothermel fire spread algorithm.

Critical fire weather patterns

When atmospheric conditions conducive to extreme fire behaviour are combined, critical fire weather patterns occur.

Extreme fire behaviour

Extreme fire behaviour can occur in any wildfire, stressing firefighting personnel and increasing the likelihood of errors and failures.

Coupled fire-atmosphere modelling

Coupled fire-atmosphere models have great potential to support operational agencies and wildfire managers during the incident support phase.
